Short description of the Project/Consultancy/Platform: This project seeks to explore the complex relationship between poverty and healthcare access in Tanzania, with a focus on both household and geographical dimensions of poverty. Tanzania continues to face significant challenges in reducing poverty and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable populations. Household poverty—encompassing income, education, and living conditions—has a profound impact on healthcare-seeking behavior and health outcomes, while geographical disparities such as infrastructure limitations and scarcity of healthcare facilities further exacerbate inequalities. Through an in-depth analysis of nationally representative data, this research will provide insights into the interplay between poverty and healthcare access. It aims to generate evidence-based recommendations to improve policies and interventions targeted at reducing poverty and enhancing healthcare equity in Tanzania. By addressing critical gaps in understanding the demand and supply of healthcare in the context of poverty, the project will contribute to national and global priorities such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (No Poverty) and 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). Objectives 1. Identify the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of household poverty in Tanzania using nationally representative data. 2. Examine the effect of geographical and household poverty on health outcomes (illness and disability status) and healthcare-seeking behavior. 3. Assess the financial burden of healthcare on poor households and access to social protection measures such as health insurance and cash transfers. 4. Analyze the capacity of the healthcare system to deliver services in areas with high levels of geographical poverty, including availability of health facilities, workers, and supplies. 5. Investigate regional inequalities in healthcare utilization and their relationship with poverty. 6. Develop evidence-based policy recommendations to strengthen social protection measures and improve poverty reduction strategies in the health sector. This research will be conducted by IHI for 6-months (December 2024 – May 2025).
